Living in Community

May 23, 2009

We all desire to have people rally around us, right? At the core of who we are, we deeply desire for others to know us completely and vice versa. This could be a bit scary or possibly downright terrifying for some, but I have an inkling that we all want it. We were created with this need for others. The kind that says, “I know your muck, you know mine, and I’m still here and glad to journey through life together”. And boy do we have muck? All sorts of muck too…. all different shapes and sizes of it. And how we deal with it is the stinky part. We smash it, we bury it, we let it merge into the different avenues of our lives… and so on and so forth. But, the real trouble in this; we are hiding. We allow our fears of being found out about to wash over us again and again like the waves in the sea. An exhausting cycle, and eventually we are worn down, like the shells on the beach that have been washed over time and time again.

This is so far from what God intended. Jesus showed up on the scene and said “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” John 8:32. Is it possible to know the truth of the gospel and still be stuck in your muck? Yep. And it happens to all of us, doesn’t it? And so, we look at another reality- to live in our truth, with others. These “others” may be one or two people, or 7-8. Whatever the number is, it is a small sampling of the “community” that our loving God longs for us to be in.

More about community tomorrow!
